St Teresa of Avilla, Bernini, Ecstasy of St Theresa in Tiber Movie

Marco and Lucia.
A borrowed gold Fiat.
The slow road to the Tiber.

After losing his job in Rome, Australian-Italian art historian Marco returns to Tuscany, where he sets out in a vintage Fiat with his young daughter Lucia on a journey toward the Tiber River. Travelling through an Italian summer of sunlit roads, ancient towns, rivers, churches and small encounters shaped by memory, art and history, Marco is drawn toward a reckoning with the loss he has long tried to contain.

TIBER places a private grief against the weight of art, history and landscape, where memory feels alive and time never fully passes.”

Director Dominic Allen

  • Marco is an Australian-Italian art historian living in Rome, where he has spent decades teaching and writing about the Baroque masters. When he is quietly let go from his post, his grief having made him distant from his students, he returns to Cortona, where his estranged wife Julia and their young daughter Lucia live. Reunited with his oldest friend Pietro, Marco borrows a battered golden Fiat X1/9 and sets out with Lucia on a summer journey toward the Tiber River in Rome, a journey bound to a promise he has carried for years. Through sunlit valleys, ancient hill towns, a lakeside where Hannibal once fought the Romans, a forest monastery and the streets of Florence, Marco and Lucia move through a landscape dense with history, beauty and remembrance. Lucia is curious, funny and disarmingly perceptive. Between them passes the particular tenderness of a father and daughter finding their way back to each other. But as the journey unfolds, small details begin to shift the terms of what we are seeing. The road to the Tiber becomes not a summer escape, but a passage through grief, memory and the terrible difficulty of letting go.
